Are you interested in taking your innovative idea, technology, or process commercial? Entrepreneurial-minded graduate and undergraduate students, faculty, staff, alumni, and local community members are invited to join the next Great Plains I-Corps cohort. The program offered through Great Plains Hub is structured around the lean startup teaching methods and principles used by NSF’s National I-Corps. The NSF-funded I-Corps program’s goal is to foster entrepreneurship for commercializing technology through customer discovery.
Participation in the program may lead to qualification for research and other funding from several granting agencies, including the NSF I-Corps and SBIR/STTR/TTP programs and various state and regional programs. Past participants have reported that they saved time and money by better understanding potential applications of their technology, experienced improved engagement with teams, and improved their ability to receive add-on funding.

MEET THE INSTRUCTORS
Heidi Bell
Heidi Bell, Ph.D., is Chair and Associate Professor in the Department of Human Performance Studies, and Manager of the Human Performance Laboratory at Wichita State University. Her research in clinical exercise physiology and orofacial myology has drawn international recognition and been showcased on NPR’s Science Friday with Ira Flatow. Over the past 30+ years she has developed a systematic and interdisciplinary network conducting collaborative research focused on exercise physiology, orofacial myology, neurocognition, biomechanics and functional performance. Dr. Bell has led and published FDA regulated product validation and test-retest reliability research, in addition to, physiological, neurocognitive and functional performance work. Her entrepreneurial background has further led to three start-up companies, development of several products, secured intellectual property, and established a platform to mentor students aspiring to be the next generation of researchers.
Gary Brooking
Dr. Gary Brooking is a Teaching Professor and the Chair of the Applied Engineering Department. Dr. Brooking received his BSc (Hons) from Cape Town University and worked for two years in the process control industry gaining his PE. He completed an MSc in Bioengineering from Clemson University and his PhD from University of Virginia in Electrical Engineering. He returned to Zimbabwe to lecture at a new university where he was involved in the development of the new Electronics and Computer Engineering Department and was later was promoted to Director of ITS.
He left academics to go into private practice where he established a number of regional companies primarily focused on information systems with special focus on education. After over 10 years in industry, he joined the University of Zimbabwe where he lectured in electrical engineering, restarted the master’s program and established links between industry and
academics resulting in several sponsored student projects. In 2014 he moved to Wichita State University as a lecturer in Biomedical Engineering to assist in creating clinical focused student projects as well as to foster an entrepreneurial mindset in students. To date, two companies have been established from these student projects. In 2018 he moved to the Applied Engineering Department, where he is currently the Chair.
